How to create your own mirkwood headpiece!
Inspired by the beautiful designs of the Hobbit-movies I made a last-minute costume for Hobbitcon 4. But the woodelf-queen needed a matching headdress to her dress! So here I show you how you can build your own crown in a short tutorial.
As a basis you use a sufficiently thick wire that you adapt to your head circumference. You can leave it closed all around your head or you can shape it already. Now you add some more limbs to the circlet, which determine the final shape.
To encase the wires you use Worblas Finest Art or other thermoplastics, which you can shape per hand. Heat your Worbla pieces (scraps work very well! ) and wrap them gently around the wire. In order not to burn your fingers wear appropriate protection (gloves) or prepare a bowl of cold water.
Try to work uneven and add thicker pieces to achieve a more organic look in the end.
Now you have completed the basis and should go on with more filigree shapes! Start from the main limbs and add some thin boughs. The more you connect the limbs with each other, the more stable your crown will be.
You need to prime your finished crown with plastic primer and black spray paint. Afterwards you apply the final colour – whether sprayed or manually. Metallic colours look good if you brush them. I highly recomment the wax colours of Pebeo.
You can add more decoration like e.g. leafs, flowers or beads. Especially berries or gypsophila (artificial flowers) are beautiful for an autumnal headdress. Be creative!
Have fun crafting!
