There was a special surprise for the Final Fantasy Fanfest 2017! One of the fans long-awaited character finally entered Final Fantasy XIV: The Samurai.
He was presented in a spectacular stage show. When the trailer for Stormblood was shown over the big screen, one could feel the enthusiasm. When Naoki Yoshida, Director, Producer and Head of Final Fantasy, entered the stage in the samurai outfit, the audience broke into a thunderous applause. What Square Enix has come up with was an awesome show!
Not only my fanheart for this wonderful game hit higher in this moment, but for me it was a very special honor to be part of something so great! Defcon Unlimited took me to the team last year to bring the character to life.
The preparations began as early as August 2016. I was able to take a first look at the concept arts and take measures. We got an overview of the outfit pieces and distributed the tasks in the team. I was responsible for the implementationproduction of the garments – kimono, cloth & belt – while all the props and the detailed katana were made by Defcon Unlimited.
It was particularly difficult to interpret from the drawings how the garments should fall and function. Unfortunately, the trailer was not available at this time and I had to rely entirely on the concepts. For example, the kimono is based on very historical forms, but this was only a distant aid. Overall, the outfit has many fantastic details and the cut required a lot of precision and unconventional thinking.
The entire costume is decorated with numerous motifs, which have been done differently according to the customer wishes. First, all of them had to be re-drawn exactly and interpreted as precisely as possible from the concept art. In the end everything was elaborately applied with faux leather and embroidered with metal yarn, some motifs were printed with gold foil. This resulted in a very high-quality outfit with a lot of depth. Maja from Defcon Unlimited gave the finishing touches with the appropriate Weathering.
To see our completed costume on stage after so many months of hard work was a very emotional moment for us. Thanks to the Japanese and German Square Enix team for the confidence they have shown in this incredible project!
